What to Pack

This is a well discussed and debated topic, but it really comes down to knowing your hike.  If you are out for a 3-hour hike and are hitting the trail at 9 AM is it completely necessary to bring a flashlight, matches for a fire, and a tarp for a lean-to?  Of course not.   And if this group ever tackles a full-day or overnight hike, we'll plan ahead and distribute the appropriate list of necessities.

What to Bring
  • Water - this is the most important item to pack.  General rule of thumb is a quart of water every two hours of hiking.  Hydration differs by person, but if you are unsure, pack at least this much but not more than you can carry.
  • Food (Snacks/Lunch) - see how difficult the hike is and plan accordingly.  I personally love to bring granola bars, apples, and almonds.  Other ideas are trail mixes, fruits, and energy bars.  Be sure to pack out
  • Maps - we'll link to the appropriate trail map ahead of time, please print it.  Relying on your phone is a beginners mistake - batteries die and poor reception is possible.
  • Sunscreen (and sunglasses if you would like)
  • Bug Spray - Not just for mosquitoes, but for tics as well.  They are rampant in our area, but not dangerous if you check yourself thoroughly after a hike.  Great resource here on the subject.
  • Backpack or waist pack - to carry all this stuff!
