Trail Tips

Most trail tips are common sense but worth pointing out.  Many people avoid hiking mainly because they don't know what to expect.

Trail Markers
Most official trails have clear markings to follow, these are called blazes.  If you ever find yourself a little lost, simply backtrack until you find the appropriate blaze.  There are a few universal trail blazes to help give direction, and while those listed below are in black and white, most trails are marked with a specific color.  This allows a hiker to follow the appropriate blaze when there are multiple trails in the area.

Common Trail Blazes
Garbage
"Leave no Trace" and "Pack in, Pack Out" are tenants of the hiking community.  Nature is beautiful, nature is wonderful, nature is harmed by humans who leave their waste behind.  Please pack all garbage up and bring back to your car.  Also, don't feed wildlife and stay on the trail.

Bathroom Breaks
Most trail heads do not have bathroom facilities, though some do have a porta potty.  When nature calls, simply go off trail and be sure to pack out any hygiene related products.

Fellow Hikers and Trail Etiquette
Say hello, hikers are a friendly bunch!  And if a faster group is approaching from behind let them pass.  Hiking is most enjoyable if you keep your own pace.
